Three quotes from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi:
- "No one is above the law – not even the President. Once again, the courts have resoundingly reaffirmed our efforts to hold the President accountable for corruption, and ensure that the President acts in the public interest, not his own interest."
- "The Congress holds sacred its constitutional responsibility to investigate and hold the President accountable for his abuse of power."
- “...facts regarding holding the president accountable can be gained outside of impeachment hearings.”
The Speaker says her goal is to hold the President accountable. How are House Democrats actually going to do that? Not only has Trump's behavior not been punished, it has worsened. We now have Trump rallies with "send her back" chants! He spews unadulterated hatred at The Squad. The situation is deteriorating.
Trump has committed serious impeachable offenses. Where is the accountability that Pelosi speaks of? Is it meekly asking for tax returns that, once received, must remain private? Robert Mueller finished his report 119 days ago. Numerous Mueller witnesses have refused to answer questions. What is Pelosi doing about it? As Armando said yesterday:
"To this day, the House has not even filed a court case to enforce its subpoenas."
What is the nature of the "accounting"? In the comments below, please specify exactly what happens when Trump is "held to account", as Pelosi claims she wants.
The path forward is obvious but Pelosi has blocked it. An impeachment inquiry should have already started. It would give the House extra powers to break through executive privilege and grand jury secrecy claims. The House should have gone to court the moment Trump resisted having his subordinates testify. With an impeachment inquiry, it is a slam dunk in the courts. A year's worth of embarrassing hearings for the president would damage him.
But Pelosi is NOT going to do that. She is actively whipping against an impeachment inquiry. And she will continue to do so.
The House leadership must be replaced. A truly historical moment has arrived. The leadership is not up to the task. It is time for a new generation. A generation that will actually fight.
