Once again we're keeping our powder dry. Democrats spent more than a year saying, "Wait for the Mueller report! We can't do anything until we get the report!" Mueller finished his report about 62 days ago. It contains gob-smacking bombshell revelations of clearly impeachable conduct. The report is so bad that hundreds of former prosecutors signed a letter saying there is clear evidence for an indictment. Moreover, Trump's impeachable behavior continues unabated to this day.
And yet, what have the Democrats done?
- Has Congress seen the whole Mueller report? Nope.
- Has Congress seen the grand jury materials? Nope.
- Has Congress even asked a judge to release the grand jury materials? Not that I'm aware.
- Has Congress heard from Mueller? Nope.
- Has Congress even set a date to hear from Mueller? Nope.
- Has Congress heard from McGahn? Nope.
- Has McGahn turned over his documents? Nope.
- Has Congress heard from Donaldson? Nope.
- Has Congress heard from Lewandowski? Nope.
- Has Congress heard from Hicks? Nope.
- Has Congress obtained Trump's tax returns? Not yet. (And they have to keep those secret anyway)
62 days later and absolutely nothing has happened. Nothing. Democrats are putting on a giant kabuki dance that for some reason impresses some people. But nothing is actually happening. The American people are already moving on. After all, if the Mueller report was important, Democrats would be doing something.
Of course one thing happening is that Nancy Pelosi is attacking people who want to start an impeachment inquiry, making snide remarks about "raising money" off the issue. Those of us just wanting to start an inquiry are shouted down.
Meanwhile Republicans are packing the courts with right-wing extremists who will serve on the bench until long after many of us are dead. Trump and Bolton are ramping up war with Iran with no evidence. Children are dying in immigration camps. Trump hosts rallies where he threatens political opponents with investigations. The crowd roars! The media yawns.
Cheney outed Plame with no repercussions. Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld ordered torturing with no repercussions. Wall Street criminals stole people's savings and their homes with no repercussions. Trump's actions will be treated the same, all in the name of "moving on".
The only rational reaction to all this is one of complete abject hopelessness. The daily "good news" diaries should stop. The daily "Look what Trump did!" diaries should stop. None of it matters. No one is actually going to do anything about it. We're just going to have an election and "move on".
