Congress needs a few more angry black women, if you ask me.
No, I'm not excusing what she is alleged to have done. Everybody knows that you don't strike someone else because you are having a disagreement. You especially don't strike security people or members of law enforcement. I'm sure that Ms. McKinney knew it was wrong when she did it.
But all this cable television coverage has such as nasty Uppity Negro bent to it ... It's driving me crazy.
And, again, let's face it, Congress needs a few more angry black women.
Delaware Dem can get all upset and embarrassed if he wants, but Cynthia McKinney is
what people who've been squeezed all their life by the system act like.
Sorry to say it! If he wants some mild-mannered, even-tempered, good-humored representative to come from Ms. McKinney's mostly black Georgia district, it seems unlikely that that representative is going to be actually representative of how her constituency feels about the system and how it treats them.
It's easy to get all upset because someone "gets in your face," whether it's about social injustice or a perceived personal slight.
But Ms. McKinney is an incredibly valuable member of the Democratic caucus and of Congress because of this one funny thing:
People who are marginalized are usually the only people who are willing to speak out about injustice. They are the only ones who have an incentive to talk about racism, poverty and oppression. If you are "in the system," you don't rock the boat. It's only when someone comes up from the water and takes a seat on the bench does the boat get rocked.
And, Jesus Christ -- this boat needs a bit of rocking right now.
People complain about Nancy Pelosi, because she never seems to do anything. Well, give me ten more Cynthia McKinneys in Congress and you will start to see things done. Yes, they might be bold or abrasive or whatever. Who cares? We need people who are loud, who raise a fuss, who get uppity.
Delware Dem's polished, media-savvy, mild-mannered, Beltway-acceptable lawyer-accountant replacement for Ms. McKinney isn't going to do it for us.
