AP is reporting that State Sen. Gill may in fact get the job.
This would, in my mind, be a very bold move. By sending a minority woman to the U.S. Senate, Corzine would be sending a message to NJ progressives that he is on our side. I'm sure the seven NJ congressmen who are vying for the position would not be happy, but by picking an outsider, Corzine will nullify their anger somewhat. Though I'm partial to Frank Pallone (he's my congressman), I would be very happy with Gill.
"Shortly after being elected New Jersey's governor, Democrat Jon Corzine speculated aloud that he might appoint a woman to fill out his unexpired Senate term. Then he singled out black state Sen. Nia Gill, calling her an "extraordinarily capable woman."
Gill did not shy away from the hint.
"I have the qualifications," she told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "If I am chosen by Jon, I am more than qualified to rise to the occasion.""
